Progressives Need to Get the Argument Right

Listening to Ed Shultz yesterday when a caller asked Big Eddie "who's going to police the government when it gets in the health care business?".......and Ed goes off on a long rant about the misdeeds of Haliburton over in Iraq, and how our government uncovered all this waste and fraud by Haliburton, and all this abuse of their contracts blah blah blah....

And I'm thinking...why Ed....why are you going down this road with this caller.....the question was a simple one and it required a simple answer.....who will police the government when it gets into the health care business"??? Simple answer...the government ALREADY IS IN THE HEALTH CARE BUSINESS and it is doing quite well thank you ferreting out abuse and fraud....Medicare and the VA health care systems...two of the best manged, cost effective, and most loved by their clients, health care systems in America...

When someone says they don't want the government in the health care business remind them that it is and it is doing just fine...

Say What?

Ok...let me see if I have this right. The Republicans have stated that it is their official party policy to slow down, and then kill, any health care reform this year.

And now we have Democrat Harry Reid...with a 60-40 vote majority... saying yeah, ok, lets slow down this process...it's the right thing to do for the Republicans.

Say what????

Harry...please grow some BALLS!!!!

People...call harry reid and tell him to grow some balls and stay in DC until we get a comprehensive, quality, cost effective, health care plan passed!

Health Care Protesters Arrested Part II

Over at www.counterpunch.org one of the arrested physicians responded to being arrested while trying to participate in a "public hearing on health care policy"....

Thank you Senator Baucus for being a such an ass....perhaps, in spite of the $500,000 you have received from the insurance companies, the HMO's and the pharmaceutical industry, you will be challenged when you are up for reelection by one of the thousands of Montanans with NO health insurance.

Health Care Protesters Arrested

Tuesday, at a Senate hearing on health care policy, several members of the audience were arrested for shouting out when Chairman Max Baucus tried to gavel the Committee to order. The protesters were doctors, nurses and other medical professionals. They were there representing a single payer option. They were in the audience because they were NOT invited to sit at the table by the Chairman Baucus. That spot was reserved for pharmaceutical and medical product lobbyist, representatives from the insurance industry, and representatives from HMO's.....

So, this is how it's going to be....you give Chairman Baucus Hundred's of THOUSANDS of dollars....and you get a seat at the table....you come representing the "not for profit", single payer coalition health care wing, and you get no seat at the table....and arrested for speaking up.

This is our government....we pay taxes....single payer health care is our government, using our taxes to get us the health care we want...when we want it, where we want it, and from whom we want it from....Senator Baucus and his fellow members of Congress work for us...they are paid by us...yet they seem only interested in representing those corporate interest that contribute to their campaigns...it is time for Baucus to be challenged....it is time for any Democrat not on board single payer, to be challenged....they will be coming home soon on recess....let them know you want single payer health care now!!!

Arlen Specter...Nut Case

I was willing to give Specter the benefit of the doubt when he abruptly switched from being a Republican to an Obama Democrat.   I mean, the guy has been a loyal, moderate, Republican since 1980, and it must have hurt to have his party turn on him like they did.

That said, this new Arlen Specter is not "new" and he's no Democrat.  First, he made it clear that he would continue to oppose the Employee Free Choice Act....the single most important piece of labor legislation to come along in decades.  Then he made it clear that he was not too excited about a health care plan that would do anything to cut into the huge profits being made by the insurance companies.  And today, he said he supports seating the loser of the Minnesota Senate race, Republican Norm Coleman, over the winner, Al Franken.  His stated reason for supporting the loser Coleman? Coleman is Jewish, and the Senate needs a Jewish Republican now that Specter has changed parties.

I'm sorry, but Specter is no Democrat.  He is a selfish little man with a sudden realization that he is mortal.

Swine Flu...Run for Your Lives!!!!!!!

Oh my...now we have swine flu to worry about. Never mind that nearly 3 million Americans have lost their jobs sine January 1st....Never mind that the American auto industry...one of the few things we still make in this country...is teetering on total collapse....Never mind the millions of households that are in foreclosure on their homes, or close to foreclosure....Never mind that a radical religious army is inching closer to toppling a government that has nuclear bombs.....

No...never mind any of that, because 91 Americans are sick with the flu!!!!! And boy, watch out, this swine flu is going to get much, much worse!!!!!!!

Hysteria, a distraction from the real problems in the world, an opportunity for more right wing finger pointing at Obama....swine flu. Give me a freckin' break!

Tea Bagging

I guess the right wingnuts didn't bother Googling the term "tea bagging" before making it their own....crusade.

So, even though the wingnuts, and the super wing nuts at Fox News, want you to believe that these "tea bagging" session tomorrow are a spontaneous response, they are actually well financed, and well organized by right wing consultants and think tanks....

The web site, "Save the Rich" lays it all out...this phony "grassroots" effort has a name...it's called "astro turfing" and it's as phony as plastic grass.

Loose Ends

Oh boy, have the right wing nut jobs been in a tizzy lately! Limbaugh has been going off on Veterans that call his show and take him to task for supporting torture. Just about every right wing talk show host is going off on Obama for (a) being a socialist, (b) being a fascist, (c) hating America, and (d) for being far more popular than they are! The poor boys (and girls) are having a very difficult time adjusting to a smart, articulate, and popular, President....not to mention the trouble they are having adjusting to life in a democratic...that's small "d" democratic....society. Eight years of ignoring the Constitution, and making up the laws to suit your needs, will make you a bit unsure when faced with...oh my god....real justice!

On top of that, the Vermont legislature just ok'd same sex marriage. Boy, the Apocalypse must be right around the corner.....and you have to love the nut job's arguments against same sex marriage...."it undermines the very bedrock of our democracy!" It's funny, but I thought "equal protection" was one of the bedrocks of a democracy.....I guess they think its ok to have one set of laws for some people, and another set of laws for someone else....and what set of laws you get to live your life under depends on whether THEY like you....hmmm.

Yeah, it has been a fun 100 days watching the right wing, and their Republican friends in Congress, scramble to figure out why nearly 75% of America has turned them out and off. I hear if you walk the halls of Congress you can find Republicans huddled in corners talking about tax cuts, and deregulation, and screwing working Americans....but really, who's listening, and who cares?

Drug Testing Welfare Recipients

Legislators in eight states are proposing that people receiving public assistance.....welfare...be drug tested. I assume that includes Wall Street executives and bankers too?

Suckers: Part 2

Do you want your blood to boil? Check this out.

Saturday, March 14, 2009

Suckers!

We are big fat suckers. The insurance giant, AIG, has received over $170 billion dollars in bailout money. Why? Because they are too big to fail, and if AIG did fail, it would be catastrophic for the world economy....or at least thats what some claim would happen.

But giving AIG $170 billion does not necessarily make us suckers. What makes us suckers is AIG is giving their executives over $150 million dollars in bonuses....and not just any executives....no....AIG is giving the very people in charge of the unit that got the company in trouble with risky high stakes gambling, the lion share of the bonues! SUCKER!!!!!

It's time we nationalize these companies we're bailing out....take them over...fire the people that got the company in trouble...reorganize them, break them up in to several smaller companies, and sell them off.

Republican Solutions

Faced with a worsening economic crisis what has been the Republican response? Besides more tax cuts for the wealthy? How about a "spending freeze"! Lets take a minute to ponder that..............................................................................................................................................
.....................................................................................................................................................

Had enough time?

In an economy where no one is spending....not consumers...certainly not business...who then is left to spend, to stimulate the economy? Could it be....government?!!!

These guys are insane, but don't take my word for it.

Too Big To Fail?

This article is all about the looting of America. Big financial institutions, too big to fail, engage in risky business practices, that make a ton of money, but eventually go bad, leaving the government to bail them out.

If these banks are too big to fail, why aren't we breaking them up as we bail them out?

Bobby Jindal and the Devil

Since he gave the Republican rebuttal to President Obama's address to Congress, Louisiana Governor Bobby (Piyush) Jindal is getting a lot of press for how bad his speech was. For most American's this was their first exposure to this young, rising GOP star.

However, looking a little deeper into his past, you find the name change.....remember how right wing bloggers and wing nuts insisted on calling Barack Obama "Barry", a name he often used while growing up? Apparently, Jindal was a big fan of the Brady Bunch and decided to change his name from Piyush to Bobby....But there is more than a name change in Jindal's past. In an article he wrote for the Oxford Review back in 1994, Jindal recounts an exorcism that he participated in. It seems a girlfriend was under the control of Satan. Jindal says that "sulfuric" scents hovered around his friend everywhere she went. Eventually, he and several friends in a prayer group, had to perform and exorcism on his friend. To read Jindal's account of the exorcism you can find it here. You will have to pay to read the entire article.

Early Morning Wanderings

Tom Delay was interviewed by Chris Matthews on Hardball yesterday. Tom Delay? I thought he was in jail? And why would Chris Matthews give this clown a forum? Maybe they're both clowns. eh? See the clip here

President Obama is presenting his budget today....any bets on how soon before the Senate Republicans declare it "dead on arrival"?

Taxing the rich to pay for health care? Republicans won't like that! After all, that is socialism...redistribution of wealth and all. So....what do you call it when the rich get a huge tax cut, and the middle and lower incomes get a $600 tax cut? If I understand what Obama is proposing, the value of itemized deductions for those in the 35% tax bracket would be reduced. Thus, the value of itemized deductions would be about $2800, or the same as for those taxpayers in the 28% bracket.

How Can They Be So....Out of Touch?

The extreme right wing nuts, have recently found a new hero in Rick Santilli....a former derivatives trader, turned CNBC commentator...who's rant about "loser" homeowners in default on their mortgages, has worked them into a frenzy.....a frenzy that is so out of touch with a huge majority of Americans.

Here's a poll, taken at the end of last week by USA Today....

Notice that "bailing out banks" is the least favorite option.

Those "losers" in danger of losing their homes? Sixty Four percent of us think we should do something to help them....

How out of touch are these wing nuts?

Great Choice for #2 at Dept. Of Agriculture!

Tom Vilsack has chosen Kathleen Merrigan to be the number two person at Agriculture. This is a huge victory for the organic, and local food movement. After eight years of industrial farming and agrochemical companies calling all the shots, this is very good news indeed!

Amazing!

President Obama is making the closing remarks to the Fiscal Responsibility Summit held over the last couple of days at the White House. Over 100 business, government and community leaders met to discuss budgets and deficits.

So, Obama makes his closing remarks, and then says he is going to open it up for comments from the other participants. Who was the first one he called on? John McCain....the man he beat in November. That strikes me as being extraordinary! How humble is this guy, that he can call on the man he soundly defeated, to offer up his comments on the summit! I was blown away.

Now, others are talking about their "break out" groups, what issues they addressed, what we need to do...what our country...what all of us need to do....to end these deficits, to get our economic house in order....these are Republicans, Democrats, economist....laying it out.

Obama has been President for all of ONE MONTH, and the change is slowly happening. People that differ, are actually acting like adults....for today....and that's a beginning!

**********UPDATE********

Obama just wrapped up the Fiscal Responsibility Summit.....wow! This was an extraordinary display of leadership! Business, labor, Democrat, Republican...all at the table, talking and listening with one another....finding common ground, identifying areas where they differ, looking at how to move beyond the "gridlock" and partisan fighting. One area that everyone seemed to agree needed immediate attention is health care. I will post a link to the video of this summit wrap up when one becomes available.

*************Video Link*********

As promised here's a link to the opening 10 minutes of the closing remarks.....someday I will learn how to embed the video directly...but for now the link will do...even if you have to cut and paste it to open it....I hope you enjoy watching your President as much as I did....when was the last time we had a President that has led like this?

Hypocrits!

Every Republican member of the House, and all but three in the Senate, voted no on the Economic Recover and Revitalization bill. The party line was, it contains too much spending and not enough tax cuts. Many Republicans said letting the markets run their course, and doing nothing would be better.

Now the Republicans have scurried home to visit with their constituents and explain why the stimulus plan was so bad and they had to vote no.....or are they? At least 22 Republicans are back home touting the stimulus package....and you would almost think it was all their idea, and a good thing too!

But not Republicans.....down in Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal says he will reject nearly $100 million dollars in stimulus money that would be used to put an extra $25 a week into the pockets of unemployed Louisianans. Jindal claims the "strings attached" to the stimulus money would require a change in law that would lead to an increase in taxes for businesses. But as he points out, the possible tax increase would not come for three years, and at that point the state could opt out, and change their law back to avoid passing along the tax. I bet the 25,000 unemployed workers in Louisiana would like a little extra spending money....if only for the next three years!

Republicans Oppose Largest Middle Class Tax Cut Ever!

Last week when every Republican in the House voted against the economic stimulus plan they were also voting against one of the largest tax cuts in history. A tax cut bigger than Bush's, larger than Reagan's....but primarily for middle class tax payers. Just like Obama promised during the campaign.....what's wrong with these guys?

Sunday, February 15, 2009

The Local Rich Guy

I was talking with the local rich guy the other day. He isn't so sure about this stimulus plan. He doesn't feel there's enough tax cuts for guys like him, and all this government spending on road projects and rehabbing schools, is just too much pork.

So I asked him..."rich guy, with all your money, why don't you invest a billion or two of your money in rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure"? And he said..."oh no! I couldn't do that! That's the governments job! Besides, things have been slow, and I've had to lay some workers off."

I looked him in the eye and said, "yeah, pork, the other white meat."

Republicans Play Politics...Again.

It looks as if the Republicans, collectively, are going to vote NAY on the Economic Recovery and Revitalization bill. Once again they are putting politics above country.

Looks like they plan to wait and see what happens, and like Limbaugh, hope Obama fails so they can use their NO vote in the 2010, and beyond, elections if the economy has not started to recover by then....after all...they voted no.

More Krugman

Here's Krugman on the absolute failure of Republicans, and the not quite good enough economic stimulus plan.

When Krugman gets a bad feeling in his gut, it's time to start worrying.

And This Is A Good Thing?

It looks as if a "compromise" has been reached on the stimulus bill. How a party with a majority in both sides of Congress, and a President from their party, has to reach a "compromise" on what may turn out to be the single most important piece of legislation in our lifetime, is beyond me.

Harry Reid was trumpeting the "art of compromise"...a compromise that severally cut tax relief for middle class taxpayers while giving additional tax cuts to corporations and the wealthy....a compromise that came in nearly $100 billion less than the original bill that the House approved....a compromise that will no doubt be too little to do what needs to be done....

Harry...Nancy....Barack...you guys have the White House and both houses of Congress....is this the way things will be for the next four years? Is this the "change we can believe in"? To me, it looks like the same ol' same ol'...the Republicans dictating the agenda and the final outcome of legislation.

If this keeps up...you will never see a second term.

Harry Reid

Obama gets more than 53% of the vote. Democrats win a huge majority in both the House and the Senate. More than 60% of people polled WANT a stimulus plan that benefits Main Street, not Wall Street. Yet, Harry Reid has been letting three Republican Senators push him around and dictate the composition of Obama's stimulus plan! This is simply amazing! The voters demanded change and we're getting business as usual. Sad.

I can not imagine any previous Majority Leader (notice those words, majority and leader) letting someone like Arlen Spector push him around and dictate what this peice of legislation is going to look like...no one...not LBJ...not Trent Lott..no one.

So Reid can't get 60 votes and these three obstructionst filabuster the stimulus plan...LET THEM HARRY!!! Make then stand all day and all night, piss in a bucket, order in cots and pillows...for as long as it takes...grow some balls and call their bluff!

Earth to Obama and the Democratic leadership...YOU WON THE ELECTION....now GOVERN THAT WAY!

I Love Paul Krugman

Day in and day out Paul Krugman speaks wisdom. For that, he will always have a place on this blog.

Corporate media has been paying way too much attention to a handful of "moderate" Republicans and conservative Democrats as they hacked $120 billion dollars in badly needed aid to state governments....aid for education and other programs that might be axed as these states struggle to balance their budgets as revenues decline. Not once have I heard someone from the corporate media explain the logic behind making these cuts, nor have I heard them explain the potential catastrophic results....one only has to look at the local newspaper to see that state governments are grappling with some serious financial sort falls, and that programs, and jobs, will be cut. As these states cut their education budgets, teachers will lose their jobs....as these states look at their contribution to city and towns, police and fire budgets will be cut...this is not going to be pretty.

Krugman called these "moderates" what they are....tax cut loving, people hating, idiots that have no clue about economics....These "moderates" (who really aren't moderate at all) are married to a believe that tax cuts are better than spending that directly puts people to work and money into the economy. As the chart in a previous post shows....tax cuts return a far smaller return....bang for the buck...than investing in jobs, and increasing food stamps and unemployment spending.

We can hope that this money that was cut from the stimulus package can be put back in during conference deliberations.....that is, you can hope Pelosi and other Democratic leaders can get the job done....I'm not sure than will.

Bang For The Buck...Getting the Economy Going Again

I found this over at Mother Jones. The information is from two excellent sources.

750,000 fewer jobs

Ian Welsh over at the Firedoglake blog has a good analysis of what the compromise on the economic stimulus plan with the moderates means for job growth.

Remember, these moderates claim they made these cuts because they would do nothing to create jobs....they basically called them "pork" and excessive, wasteful spending.

*****UPDATE****

A Sunday morning update...Krugman has his initial look at the Senate bill. As he says, this is really, really, not good.

Sorry We Missed This

Ben and Jerry's created a new flavor inspired by Obama....available in scoop shops during January.

Unfortunately we missed it....

Like I Said, Democrats Out Maneuvered Again

With the Republicans threatening to filibuster Obama's economic recovery plan, Harry Reid was once again out maneuvered by the Republicans and a handful of conservative Democrats. It looks like we have a stimulus bill....they cut $100 billion from the plan, mostly money for education, and added a few more tax cuts.

Dear Harry Reid and President Obama.....if the Republicans want to filibuster what will probably be the most important piece of legislation in my life time.....LET THEM!!!!!!!

Did the loss of 550,000 job in January not tell you anything? About five minutes of these guys filibustering this bill and telling us it's wasteful spending, or it doesn't contain enough tax cuts for what's left of their fat cat friends, and I think people would take to the streets looking for Republicans to string up. Grow some balls Harry.

Tax Cuts

Earlier in the day there was a vote on an amendment to the stimulus bill put forward by Senator Jim DeMint, Republican from South Carolina....it was billed as an "alternative stimulus plan" and consisted ONLY of tax cuts....no spending....the amendment failed. However, 36 out of the 41 Republicans in the Senate voted for it! Independent analysis figured it would cost over $3 trillion dollars and create very few jobs.

As Krugman pointed out in his column today, Republican tax cuts are what got us into this mess. And more tax cuts alone will not create jobs and rescue what is quickly becoming a very serious economic crisis.

You have to figure the Republicans are either still in a state of shock over how the country has turned on them and they can't come up with any new ideas, or they don't really care what anyone thinks.

Oh the Irony..

These Republicans (and a handful of Democrats) that think this economic stimulus plan is a wasteful, deficit spending program, are the very same Republicans that approved sending $12 billion dollars, shrink wrapped, and loaded on a pallet, to Iraq. Twelve billion dollars that disappeared, LOST, by the way.

Not to mention the $10 billion we are pissing away over there in Iraq every month....is that economic stimulus...is that irony?

Deputy Secretary of Agriculture

La Vida Locavore has an excellent blog post today about the possible appointment of Chuck Hassebrook as Deputy Secretary of Agriculture and what his appointment could mean for family farms, food security, and economic justice for small farmers. However, as this blog points out, industrial agriculture has some powerful friends in Congress...

Democrats Out Flanked Again

Once again the Democratic Party leadership in the House and Senate is getting hammered by the Republicans. This time it's the stimulus bill.

For the last week there's been a steady stream of Republicans on corporate media criticizing the stimulus bill as nothing more than a big spending pork bill containing all the Democrats pet projects and won't do anything to create jobs. Now, after a week of attacks a Rasmussen poll show a majority of Americans against the plan. Of course a big part of the blame has to go to corporate media and their steady diet of repeating Republican talking points as fact.

Why has this happened? Where's the leadership of the Democratic Party? Where's Obama?

Crocodile Tears

Oh my god, have you ever heard such whining and crying? Of course I'm talking about Obama capping the compensation of those executives that performed so poorly their ailing bank needed a taxpayer bailout. Big old crocodile tears....I was watching Mort Zuckerman on MSCNBC and the poor guy was coming unglued....he kept mumbling..."no one will work for that kind of pay....no one will work for that kind of pay"

And what kind of compensation are we talking about? $500,000 a year. That's right...if you screwed up so bad that your bank needs a bailout, your salary is going to be capped at $500,000 a year....and old Mortie Zuckerman was incredulous...how dare Obama do such a thing! He even said "these guys are the best and brightest, they won't work for that kind of money!" The best and brightest? You're kidding, right Mortie?

JOBS...JOBS...JOBS!!!!

I don't get it. Back in October we had an economic crisis. The entire world economy was going to collapse because people couldn't make their house payments. Everyday we heard about these nasty subprime loans leading to soaring interest rates, and suddenly homeowners were faced with foreclosure. On top of that, or because of that, credit was freezing up...banks were no longer liquid...they couldn't get money to lend even if they wanted to lend.

Unfortunately, the economic crisis was far worse than that. One problem led to another that led to another...like domino's falling. The up shot of all this is people have used up whatever credit they had, and soaring unemployment.... demand for goods has dried up. If no one is working, and you can't borrow anymore, no one is spending.

Along comes the Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Plan....aka..the "stimulus plan" .

The Republicans in the House made it clear they would rather play politics than get serious about solving a once in a generation economic crisis.

And the Senate Republicans? Well...they want tax cuts. It's their answer to every problem. Cut taxes and the environment will be cleaner. Fight a war on terror? Easy, cut taxes. Stimulate the economy and get people back to work? Cut taxes...

Ah, but they also want to do something about this housing crisis. They actually think that housing is the "root of this problem". I heard one Republican Senator say we need to start building houses again. Yeah, we do...someday, but right now we have a glut of homes on the market...prices are falling by 25..35..40%...but who can buy them? I see a lot of homes for sale, and not many people stepping up to purchase....even at these reduced prices.

What the Senate Republicans want to do is force banks...especially those receiving TARP funds to offer low interest rates on home loans to credit worthy buyers. Now, that sounds real nice, I think...but the devil is in the details. Who is considered "credit worthy"? And what happens when that new home owner loses her job? You see, the problem we have faced all along is people could not afford their home. And someone with no job, or someone with a job that might be gone tomorrow, is not going to borrow a couple hundred thousand dollars if they are afraid for their financial future...and building more houses is not a big enough, deep enough stimulus. We have serious problems and we need a big plan.

Tax cuts? We have had nearly 40 years of steady tax cuts and look at how great our economy is today. Yes, there should be some tax cuts in the stimulus plan for the short term kick they can give, but these tax cuts should be to middle class families, not the wealthy, not to corporations. Tax cuts will not create jobs.

Do you remember Bush's rebate last year? Economist figure less than 40% of that $150 billion was actually spent. The majority went to pay off debt. The numbers for the 2001 rebate are no better.

So you see....it comes down to JOBS!!!! We need to get people back to work in jobs that are secure. Put a regular, steady wage in their pockets. Once that happens demand for housing, appliances, cars, etc. will be there. The Senate Republicans know this but they aren't interested in jobs. They'll call it socialism and bigger government...all the old tired worn out slogans that have served them over the years.....never mind that government investment in green technology, and infrastructure repair, means contracting with private contractors and businesses to do the work. They are not interested in a strong middle class. So they have a plan....tax cuts and home building. Ideologically, they have nothing else to offer.

Poor David Brooks

David Brooks is paid big money by PBS, the New York Times, and other major media outlets to provide a "conservative opinion" of what goes on in the political sphere. Personally, I have always thought the guy was a bozo. This piece in today's New York Times is smug, arrogant, out of touch, and does nothing to change my opinion of him.

Check out the comments from the readers....they're priceless!

Daschle Withdraws Name

Well, well....the Washington insiders might finally be getting it. The average person plays by the rules, and pays their taxes....and they get very angry when these people with chauffeured driven cars, hired help, and high paying "consulting" jobs, appear to cheat on their taxes and get away with it...

Now, please Mr. Obama, appoint Howard Dean!!!! Yeah, yeah, I know...he really pissed off all those Washington insiders when he had the audacity to run for President in 2004....and I know, he really pissed off Rahm Emanuel when he stuck by his 50 state strategy as Chair of the DNC....but Howard Dean is a physician, a former governor, a student of health care reform, and apparently, he knows how to win....

Republicans Elect Karl Rove Like Sleeze Ball to Head Their Party

The Republican party is in big trouble. They have lost the last two elections big time, and are finding their message of fear, hate, division, corporate greed, deregulation, and tax cuts for the rich is going nowhere fast.

So what do they do? They elect a big ol' sleeze ball to head the party! Last fall they chose Palin as the answer to Hilary, and this winter they have chosen Micheal Steele as their answer to Obama....

But unlike Obama, this guy Steele is a dirty trickster from way back. He has used race in every election he has been involved with...always in an underhanded way. Now, he gets to lead a party where African Americans number in the dozens and real bigots number in the hundreds of thousands...it should be interesting to see how far this sleeze will go now that he has his hands on the Republican apparatus.

It's Time to Drop Daschle

Tom Daschle was caught doing what any self respecting rich guy would do.....cheating on his taxes. Not only did he not report the use of a driver and a car for the past 18 months to the IRS, but he also kept his little tax problem a secret from the Obama team that was vetting him for the position of Secretary of Health and Human Services.

I say it is time for Obama to say good bye Tom....he does not need, nor do we, another Secretary with a problem paying taxes...

My suggestion to Obama.....drop Daschle right now and recruit Dr. Howard Dean for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Howard Dean has the experience...as a doctor and former governor of Vermont, and as Chairman of the Democratic Party he deserves much of the credit for the Democrats success over the last four years.

Not A Single Republican Voted For the Economic Recovery Plan

Not one Republican house member voted for the Presidents economic stimulus plan. Not one. These are the same guys that told Obama they were going to vote no BEFORE he went to the Hill seeking their input and bipartisan support. Their minds were made up...

This is the same group of Republicans that have presided for the last eight years over the largest deficit spending, and pork laden budgets of all time. Amazing nerve......lets hope they get an earful from their constituents....you know, the voters that said back in November, lets stop the partisan politics and work together to solve these serious problems.

The Employee Free Choice Act

Bernie Marcus, the CEO of Home Depot is on record stating that passage of the EFCA will mark the end of western civilization. EFCA basically allows a majority of employees to declare they are forming a union, and gives them protection against the heavy hand of management.

Here's an article with audio excerpts from a conference call between Marcus and other CEO's as they plot against passage of EFCA. It's worth a listen.

Here's an.....UPDATE.....Robert Rubin on why we need stronger unions.

Obama Meets With Republicans

Well good for Obama....why anyone would want to listen to a bunch of wealthy Republican Congressmen sing the same ol' tax cuts, tax cuts and more tax cuts song, is beyond me.

Over the last 30 years this philosophy of cutting taxes for the wealthy has resulted in the greatest redistribution of wealth in the history of our nation....and look at the economic mess we're in....and these Republicans, who apparently have no other answers, want MORE TAX CUTS!!! Do any of these people even remotely have a clue when it comes to the economy? I heard one California Republican argue that tax cuts for the wealthy and large corporations would put people to work, but fixing sidewalks, and building roads wouldn't. Now that is sheer genius!

Clue less...absolutely clue less.

****UP DATE****
The news services are reporting that the Republicans, who had their minds made up that they would vote NO before they even met with Obama, really worked him over during their meeting. Apparently, they feel there's too many "pet projects" and not enough tax cuts in the stimulus plan that the Democrats presented. One genius went so far as to say the ONLY THING this plan would stimulate was greater deficits and greater government spending. Yeah? Isn't the consensus amongst economist that we are going to have to live with some deficits if we are going to turn the economy around? Don't those Republican tax cuts lead to deficits? How do these guys think we'll get out of this recession?

Black Monday Continues

It looks like another 20,000 jobs on the block today....that makes 62,000 jobs world wide...gone....in the last 24 hours!

Do the Republicans really think tax cuts are going to solve this problem?

This problem is deep, it's going to be long lasting, and nothing short of a far reaching stimulus plan is going to work.

Going Global

What started with Thatcher and Reagan back in the early 1980's.....deregulate...privatize, cut taxes on the wealthy, and let business do it's thing....is meeting with a messy, noisy, and sudden death around the world.

It was called voodoo economics for a reason.

More Jobs Lost

This weekend companies as diverse as Caterpillar, Home Depot, and Nextel announced a round of lay offs and job cuts. That's 43,000 more jobs lost.....and 2.6 million jobs lost since December 2007.

But Rush Limbaugh still hopes the economic recovery plan fails. Maybe Rush does not know what economic stimulus is?

Climate Change

The Guardian has a sobering interview with James Hansen, the NASA climate scientist that was constantly having run ins with George Bush. Hansen say's Obama has four years to turn this whole global warming around, and if America leads the rest of the world will follow....if not...well....read the interview...

More Limbaugh

I hesitate to give this buffoon even five seconds of my time, but he keeps right on popping off....last week he said he hoped Obama failed because that would mean more electoral success for Republicans...and this week he's still chattering away. Rush figures if the stimulus plan works, the Democrats will be in power for an "eternity". So, he hopes it fails, right along with Obama. Yes, it's true, Rush cares more about getting Republicans elected than he does about your job, your health care, and the economic condition of our country! This guy is truly an unpatriotic swine. The years of abusing prescription drugs (that he forged prescriptions for) have turned his brain to mush.

But you know, Limbaugh is not alone...many Republicans do not want you to vote, many want you to be afraid and take your shoes off before boarding a plane, and many could care less that your wages are falling.

Limbaugh is a rich, fat guy.....and he feels his mortality. He has nothing left but his own greed, and a desire to remain in the spotlight. Obama is a major threat to taking that spotlight away, and his politics of inclusiveness is alien to Limbaugh. I'll go out on a limb and predict he is in the final days, and are witnessing the death of this giant dwarf star called Limbaugh.

Obama's Speech

Naomi Wolf summed up Obama's Inauguration speech nicely in this Guardian article. In essence, no more fake optimism. I think it's going to be refreshing to have a President firmly planted in reality.

Obama's Food Agenda

Christopher Cook, writing in the Christian Science Monitor last month, laid out why Obama needs a food agenda that leaves behind industrial farming and supports sustainable agriculture.

Where our food is grown, how it is grown, and who will be growing it, is without a doubt, going to become THE issue as we move into the next decade. Making sure that we have local choices when it comes to our food, is something we can all have a role in. When the economic stimulus money is being filtered down to the state and local levels, small and medium size family farms and those who work with local farmers.....packaging and marketing....deserve a share of this money. Local farms, and the businesses that support local agriculture, use to be a substantial portion of a local economy. I bet they will be once again.

Obama's Farm Agenda

Over at the new whitehouse.gov site I found Obama's farm agenda. On the surface this looks pretty good...

Ensure Economic Opportunity for Family Farmers

  • Strong Safety Net for Family Farmers: Fight for farm programs that provide family farmers with stability and predictability. Implement a $250,000 payment limitation so we help family farmers -- not large corporate agribusiness. Close the loopholes that allow mega farms to get around payment limits.
  • Prevent Anticompetitive Behavior Against Family Farms: Pass a packer ban. When meatpackers own livestock they can manipulate prices and discriminate against independent farmers. Strengthen anti-monopoly laws and strengthen producer protections to ensure independent farmers have fair access to markets, control over their production decisions, and transparency in prices.
  • Regulate CAFOs: Strictly regulate pollution from large factory livestock farms, with fines for those that violate tough standards. Support meaningful local control.
  • Establish Country of Origin Labeling: Implement Country of Origin Labeling so that American producers can distinguish their products from imported ones.
  • Encourage Organic and Local Agriculture: Help organic farmers afford to certify their crops and reform crop insurance to not penalize organic farmers. Promote regional food systems.
  • Encourage Young People to Become Farmers: Establish a new program to identify and train the next generation of farmers. Provide tax incentives to make it easier for new farmers to afford their first farm.
  • Partner with Landowners to Conserve Private Lands: Increase incentives for farmers and private landowners to conduct sustainable agriculture and protect wetlands, grasslands, and forests.

"I Hope Obama Fails"

Yesterday, Rush Limbaugh said he hopes Obama fails. How patriotic! He further went on to say that "liberalism " has brought on all the problems we face. As if Bush had nothing to do with it!

Well, Rush is a multi-millionaire, egotistical, drug addict, but I'm not sure that excuses his over the top angry man screes.

I have a feeling that Obama's Presidency, and the way Obama has reached out to the right, to bring this country together, is going to make Limbaugh's brand of hate, and divisiveness, less relevant. And there is nothing that scares a millionaire egomaniac more than becoming irrelevant.

No Pardons?

Unless George Bush does something in the next couple of hours, there will be no blanket pardons for Cheney, Rumsfeld, and the other master minds of this disastorous eight years of war, and attacks on our civil liberties.

Did he work out some sort of deal with Obama on this?

Bush's Farewell

On Tuesday, at 11:59 am...Bush will be spending his final minute as President....I think we should send him off with a song...

So, at that moment...11:59 am...stop what you are doing and join with friends, and strangers, in singing.....the words go like this: Na, Na,Na, Na...hey, hey, hey, goodbye!

Rose Hayden-Smith on Montana Food Efforts

Last week the Huffington Post ran this article by Rose Hayden-Smith on the efforts being made in Montana to grow its local food economy...
Posted January 6, 2009 | 12:22 PM (EST)
Last fall, while the financial market experienced a kind of volatility that had nearly everyone drawing parallels with the Great Depression, I had the privilege of participating in the Western Regional Assembly on Farm-to-School, which was sponsored by Ecotrust. A large group gathered in Portland, Oregon to share information, develop strategies and network around the issues of good food for schools, institutions and communities.

To many people, farm-to-school/farm-to-cafeteria, school gardens and attempts to create local food systems are somewhat of a novelty. Here's the line of thinking...Sure, it's important to provide healthier food options to youth and communities, and to teach them about agriculture and the food system. And it's important to try to eat locally sourced foods as much as possible, for many reasons. But mostly, these activities lie largely outside of the "big-E" economic and the "big-A" agricultural system. They are simply too small in scale to make much of an impact.

What I learned about this topic has shifted my thinking in fundamental ways. Local food systems -- including farm-to-institution programs -- can mean real money for local farmers, local food processors and local/state economies.

And the state of Montana has an excellent model for this.

Mary Stein, who is on the faculty of Montana State University, recently shared information with me about what's going on in Montana in terms of needs and opportunities. She described an area of acute poverty that has developed on the eastern flank of the Rocky Mountains, and in reservation counties. I did some research of my own and was astounded to learn that some of the poorest counties in the United States are in Montana. Rural residents have been struggling there for years. History repeating itself? Perhaps. While 1929 marked the beginning of the Great Depression for Main Street America, rural residents had been struggling for nearly ten years prior to that, since the conclusion of WWI. Then, as now, rural struggles too often go unnoticed in the United States.

Per Stein, through the 1950s, Montana produced about 70% of the food its residents consumed. That figure has fallen to 10%, and the state is perilously - some would argue dangerously - dependent upon food that is shipped in, much of it via trucks. A frequent observation is that Montana is one truck driver strike away from food insecurity.

Like many other states, Montana's attempts to recreate a more local and sustainable food system have been hampered because of the loss of nearly all the food processing infrastructure in the last fifty years. When we created a meta/mega food system in America, one of the casualties was local food processing. What Montanans grow has changed over the years, too, and the agricultural product is less diversified today than in the past. Montana has become a commodity-based agricultural system, producing mostly grains and beef cattle that are shipped out of state for processing and distribution. Ironically, Montanans probably import processed grains and meat that they produced initially.

It's not just a lack of processing infrastructure that hampers the effort to eat more locally sourced foods. It is also federal school lunch policy. "With the way the commodities programs are currently structured, there is a massive barrier for K-12 schools to source these commodity products locally," MSU's Stein says. "Montana is a beef state, and yet it's almost impossible for our schools to access locally-produced beef, because districts can't specify local beef within the federal commodities program." Nor can they get cash in lieu of commodities to buy local beef. (This is a policy area that incoming Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack could influence, by the way, as federal school lunch programs fall under the purview of the United States Department of Agriculture).

Grow Montana seeks to change this food system and revitalize the state's economy. Grow Montana is a broad-based coalition whose purpose is "to promote community economic development policies that support sustainable Montana-owned food production, processing, and distribution, and that improve all of our citizens' access to Montana foods." The coalition is coordinated by the National Center for Appropriate Technology, which is based in Butte, Montana, and which is also one of the coalition's partners.

Grow Montana Director Nancy Matheson says of their model, "We're looking to use the local food movement as a way to transform and revitalize Montana's economy, specifically the rural economy." She is particularly interested in hearing from others who are working on topics central to rural food systems and economic transformation.

Grow Montana works on multiple levels. It encourages conversations with communities, entrepreneurs, farmers and ranchers, identifying needs and opportunities. Matheson says, "The message is coming from the grassroots, and we take it on a collective basis to the state level." And Grow Montana's policy work is having real economic impacts, because its members recognize the real opportunities that exist. Unlocking the Food Buying Potential of Montana's Public Institutions - Towards a Montana-based Food Economy is a study that provides information about one Grow Montana strategy that impacts farm-to-school programs, and could inform this kind of work elsewhere.

On the ground, Grow Montana's work is equally impressive. The organization uses a FoodCorps to accomplish vital economic and human goals. FoodCorps members -- who are VISTA volunteers -- deploy to create and develop farm-to-cafeteria programs in local schools and colleges. Through these programs, K-12 schools and colleges buy locally-grown food. This strengthens Montana's agricultural economy, while also strengthening the prospect of community health by serving local, healthy and delicious food to youth.

The FoodCorps work is coordinated by Crissie McMullan, who traveled with this year's FoodCorps members (hundreds of miles via a van) to the Western Regional Assembly in Portland. One of the real "goose bump" moments at the gathering was when the Montana delegation was asked to stand. These incredible young volunteers -- who are doing such important and ground-breaking work in sustainable food systems -- earned an enormous and sustained round of applause.

Per Grow Montana Director Matheson, FoodCorps also enables the larger organization to "develop strategies that we can test in the real world, on the ground...strategies that inform our policy work." Food Corps volunteers track statistics about the amount and value of local food purchased for their programs; valuable information is being gained. And dollars are staying in Montana because of the program. The economic impact is real.

Department of Labor?

Pity the poor Republicans in Congress. For the last 35 years the Department of Labor has been anything but friendly toward working men and women. OSHA rules and regulations have gone unenforced, big business has been able to keep unions out of the work place, and box stores, like WalMart, have gotten away with not paying workers for overtime. Pretty much with the Department of Labor looking the other way.

Now along comes Obama and his appointment of Hilda Solis to head the Department of Labor. Apparently, Ms. Solis supports the Employee Free Choice Act, and this has Republican members of Congress recoiling in horror!

The current Labor Secretary is Elaine Chao, the wife of union hating Senator Mitch McConnell. I don't know about you, but I think it's high time we had a pro working person Secretary of Labor. Considering the anti American worker sentiment of the Republicans in this country, working people need all the friends they can get.

Happy New Year, Harry Reid Has to Go!

Happy New Year....

Let's get the New Year off to a good start and replace Harry Reid (Senate Majority Leader) with someone with brains, backbone, and a better sense of what "majority" means.

Can this guy do anything right?

In 2006 the country supported Democrats who pledged to end the war in Iraq. So what did Reid do with this majority in the Senate and anti-war sentiment in the country? He let the Republicans call the shots, backed down when they threatened to filibuster any bill that would end funding for the war, or set a time table for withdrawal.

Time and time again, on important legislation, he has been out maneuvered by the Republican minority, resulting in watered down legislation, or no legislation at all.

Now, along comes Roland Burris and the Obama Senate seat. Regardless of how you feel about Gov. Blagojevich, he is still the governor and has the powers and responsibilities that come with that office. He legally appointed Burris to fill that seat until an election in 2010. But Harry Reid says, oh no, he won't recognize the credentials of anyone appointed by Blogo...

That set up the scene yesterday in from of the Capital, Burris, standing in the rain, telling the press that Reid refused to seat him, but he was going to fight for the seat that is legally his....

Now, this morning, the AP is reporting that Reid has changed his mind and will seat Burris....or has he?

Regardless, the Republican minority has once again made the Democrats are look like fools and Harry Reid is wearing the dunce hat again....this guy has got to go if Obama is to have any hope of getting a stimulus plan, or any major piece of legislation, passed.
